Interesting review of Cromwell's Ireland campaign. Revisionist in tone - attempts (successfully I think) to argue that the massacres associated with Cromwell at Drogheda and Wexford didn't involve civilians and would have been broadly acceptable under the rules of war at the time. James Butler, Earl of Ormonde also comes over as more interesting than I'd have thought (although clearly not as smart as Cromwell).
