The lesson about altruism might have worked better if Pooh and Christopher Robin weren't stalking and creeping on their friends during Pooh's secret gift-giving spree.

(My Pooh Project: I love Winnie the Pooh, and so does my wife. Having a daughter gave us a chance to indoctrinate her into the cult by buying and reading her every Pooh book we came across. How many is that? I’m going to count them this year by reading and reviewing one every day and seeing which month I finally run out. show more Track my progress here:

The story posits today is the first time Pooh has ever heard his stomach rumble and has him going round to his friends to figure out what the sound might mean. But they're all too busy making their own body sounds -- sneezes, hiccups, yawns, and snores -- to help.

It's cute, but I would have given the book 5-stars if we could have heard Eeyore fart. I mean, those thistles have got to make him gassy, right?

Pooh and Piglet hurt Roo's feelings by ignoring him, so he sulks all day until Kanga persuades him to communicate his feelings. It leans into the lesson with too much repetition and too little story. But that was a common problem in this series.

Having now finished re-reading all eighteen books -- Woot! Woot! -- I gave thumbs up to just seven. The terrific art by Atelier Philippe Harchy for the whole series is 5-star perfection though for anyone who loves the Disney style.

Tigger's attention deficit causes him to be more of a fidgety hindrance than a help when the Pooh friends are planning a surprise party for Christopher Robin. There's plenty of slapstick to amuse, but I don't really see how Tigger's promise to listen better on the last page is any different from the several he makes throughout the book. He's given no coping strategies, just increasing levels of disapproval from his peers.
