I received this book in a Goodreads First Reads draw. I have only just started reading this but already the beautiful prose has grabbed me. The writing is of an exceptionally high standard and the storytelling is superb.
The story gently unfolds through the central character Ruth and the figures in her background. The descriptions of the inner worlds of Ruth and others around her lineage are exquisite, how they relate and respond to their own particular situations and to what is happening in show more the world around them.
This all creates a swirling, fluid feeling as the prose unfolds the story. At times I felt lost, forgetting where I had come from and having no sense of where I was heading having become lost in the elegant descriptions I was reading in the present.
Once I allowed the story to take me and abandon any preconceptions I had, my experience became richer. I read this while commuting and often found myself drifting off admiring the the beautiful sunny mid winter view unfolding in front of me while reflecting on the vivid descriptions of the story.
A beautiful, beautiful book. show less
