- Dr. Joas Wagemakers is Senior Research Associate at the Clingendael Institute. He also works at Radboud University Nijmegen as Assistant Professor and Post-doctoral Researcher. His research focuses on Islamic intellectual history and his more specific research interests are Islamist movements and Islamist ideology in the context of the modern Middle East (particularly Jordan, the Palestinian territories and Saudi Arabia) and in relation to early-Islamic history. He has published widely on Islamism and Islamist ideology. He co-edits ZemZem, a Dutch-language journal on the Middle East, North-Africa and Islam and blogs at Jihadica.com, a weblog on developments in jihad.
He holds a PhD from Radboud University Nijmegen on the ideology and influence of Abu Muhammad al-Maqdisi, widely considered one of the most important radical Islamic scholars. He also graduated with a Master’s degree in Arabic & Islam from Radboud University, and with a BA in English from Fontys Hogescholen in Tilburg.
