Wonderful. I cannot tell you how many times I have read this book since 1968 when I bought it. At least once every second year. It never palls and has kept me buying every new Pern book ever since. A gem of a novel, perfect in every way to an uncritical reader who loves a good story.
A series that I am rereading after 30 years, and I still like it. A friend told me about these books after we graduated from college and I loved them. I still can remember some of the characters, such as Robiton, the Master Harper, F'lar, Lessa, F'nor, Jaxon and Moreta. Good strong characters in a wonderful new world and universe.
Anne McCaffrey is the quintessential writer of fantasy books pertaining to dragons. These books are always wonderful, well written, and perfectly characterized. All of her series are great but the ones that take place on Pern are the best of all. This particular title is not among my top faves by her but it is still a great read.
A great story no matter how it is illustrated.

(But I prefer the original.)
