The soldiers selected Simon and forced him to comply, aiding the effort to brutally punish an innocent man. Thru Simon's eyes you will see that the Roman yoke is becoming intolerable to the Jews. The confusion is fronted with a carpenter from Galilee who is performing, miraculous signs and speaking of a new heavenly Kingdom for Israel.
Simon was not one of Jesus' followers, but a big rustic Jew standing in the crowd that the centurion's eye fell on and ordered him to carry the cross. Being there that day changed his life. His pride crushed, his despair overcome, he became a follower.
