This modern fantasy follows a group of three girls who are all best friends. They are having a sleepover during a snow day and are hoping to enter into the Secret Kingdom where they are the brave protectors of all fun. They must try to stop the evil Queen Malice from sucking all the fun and good magic out of the kingdom because of her jealousy towards her brother, King Merry. The evening goes smoothly however and the magic box never glows or gives the riddle to help them foil the queen's show more plans, so the girls finally decide to go to sleep. However, in the middle of the night, one of the girls is woken up by a bright light in the bedroom! Thinking it too early to be dawn, she wakes her friends and rushed to the source of the glowing light - the magic box containing magical elements from the Secret Kingdom. The riddle appears, pointing them to the Magic Mountain and just when they've figured out where to go, the pixie that helps them shows up in the bedroom to change them into warm clothes and whisk them away to the magical land where anything is possible. When they arrive at the Magic Mountain, the girls and their pixie friend discover the town of the brownies to be completely deserted! Deciding it was odd for such a thing in the winter time, the friends set out in search of King Merry at his winter abode on the mountain... At first, the area seems to be completely deserted as well, but soon they hear a noise. Upon entering the throne room, they discover all the little magical brownies huddled alongside the king for warmth because their magical everwarm embers have gone out! This had the evil signature of Queen Malice written all over it. The girls had to find a way to relight the embers so everyone could stay warm and so the brownies wouldn't turn to ice! One of the girls has a fantastic idea to use the sun to light the embers because the pixie's magic is frozen inside of her. The friends take several brownies down to the pond and the little creatures cut a magnifying glass out of ice. Once the embers are all collected the pixie flies the ice up into the crack between the clouds and tries to aim the sun at them; just as the clouds are about to cover it, the embers finally light! However, all is not well yet because the queen discovers what has happened and sent the mean storm sprites to douse the embers with water! If they succeeded, the embers would never be able to be relighted again. Luckily, everyone is just warm enough to rally and stop the naughty storm sprites from completing their mission! After this happens, everyone gets busy putting all the embers back where they belong and the girls are invited to go to the nearest cafe for some warm hot cocoa before heading home. show less
What is a zoologist and do they only work in zoos? What kind of specialists are there? What is an ichthyologist? Is it the same as being a veterinarian? How do they study animals and why? This book is part of a series of books for youth in which Scientific American investigates careers in science and is filled with interesting photographs.
