Tim Cockey’s third book in his ‘Hearse’ series, the 2002-published THE HEARSE CASE SCENARIO, is a very funny tale of undertaker Hitchcock ‘Hitch’ Sewell’s investigation of a local murder.
I thought I knew who the murderer was, changed my mind, changed it back, and not once was I right. A part of what makes a great mystery is this: a story where you can’t guess the ending.
The story starts with Hitch’s friend Lucy appearing at his funeral home and telling him she just killed her show more boyfriend Shrimp, a local who owns a popular jazz lounge. More murders pile up and lots of people may have the motives to do them. Meanwhile: Krishnas give away food, a man has hands the size of toasters, and a large painting is maneuvered out of a second story window.
As I’ve said, this is a great mystery just in the fact that you can’t guess the murderer (at least I didn’t). Other strengths of this book include the great building of characters and the several sub-plots going on.
My favorite character has to be Hitch himself with his slanted look at life. His conversations with his P.I. friend Pete Munger are classic. Hitch has a fabulously dry sense of humor. I LOVED it and kept laughing out loud all through the book.
I believe everyone who likes a good modern mystery will enjoy THE HEARSE CASE SCENARIO. show less

I've always wanted to use the phrase 'sardonic wit' and Tim Cockey, bless his heart, has now given me a chance. This story is overflowing with sardonic wit. It's funny but it is not a lighthearted mystery. It's an excellent story written by a guy who can turn a phrase until it nearly backs over itself. Hitchcock Sewell is an undertaker who now also appears in Cockey's second book which is absolutely on my list to read soon!
Talk about your twists and turns in a murder mystery! Tim Cockey keeps you guessing up to the very end of this one; but that's not even what I love the most about these books...I love his humor! Once again we have Baltimore's hunky mortician, Hitchcock Sewell, out solving a murder...the death of his former lover's nanny, who we discover is also pregnant at the time of death. Someone wanted the nanny dead or the baby dead...and someone wants Hitch dead. Heck, people are dying left and right show more in this one. All the while, Hitch still manages to whip up some amusing comments to lighten the tone. If you love adventure and comedy, you've got to get started on these series. And let's not forget the James Bond undertones here. *lol* Hitch always ends up with a beautiful woman! Have a few hours to waste? Spend them with Hitch! show less
It had potential. I think I would have liked it much more if I hadn't gotten the abridged version.
Hitchcock is an undertaker and we first meet him when he's trying to figure out why he's been called to an obvious murder scene before the cops. Only to discover his friend wants him to make the body 'disappear'. The mystery was pretty well hidden, the story was pretty good and Hitchcock was pretty funny.
I'd be willing to try another one, though next time it will be an unabridged copy.
