TIVOLEM is the best of the MILKWEED books I've read.
Featuring hand-drawn maps, the book opens with a single cannon shot as Marie-Santana
slips into the Portuguese colony of GOA on the western side of India in 1933.
The story with her grandmother gently unfolds, veering from Friendship to The Evil Eye and on into promised Love.
Very disappointing is the ending = Marie's unwillingness to claim the fortune stolen from her, money which could save her, her Grandma,
and her village friends when show more sickness, drought, and death appear. Instead, she will have to rely on the choices of men, again.
The cover is perfect! show less
