This comes from a solid series called Animal Safari that's designed for the earliest emerging readers. Quite frankly, a series on wild animals for emerging readers is just about the best thing that I could add to my shelves. This, books about pets, and books about characters from their favorite TV shows and movies are the only requests I get. I have to introduce every other part of the library to them. So when I can add more than a dozen different titles that are age-appropriate and show more text-apporpriate, I jump at it.
This book about gazelles was among my favorites. The poor gazelle seemed to be every predatory animal's favorite menu item in this series, but they're such amazing animals. Sure, being forever on the run from everything with sharp teeth is probably responsible for that, but they also have a quirky side. For instance, I'd never heard of pronking, but this book brought it up, and it made me wonder about gazelles in a way I never had before. If it does that for me, it's sure to do the same for my students. show less

This particular volume about warthogs even managed to teach me a few things. For instance, I didn't know that warthogs actually have bumps on their face that are called warts. It makes sense, but that's not something I was aware of beforehand. Nice book. It will fit well in the library. show less

Create a Rocket!: And More Flight Challenges (Super Simple Makerspace Steam Challenge) by Megan Borgert-Spaniol
Spark kids imagination with flight related craft construction challenges! While this book would be good for a school makerspace, with its emphasis on maker attitude, creativity, and challenges, it's more about design challenges, with demands and time limits That means the challenges are for visual design and creation of things that look like they would fly, not actual flying models.
The examples are a spacecraft for space tourists, an aircraft-- this one is supposed to be able to remain show more airborne for at least 15 feet, but I'm skeptical of the pictured models! the Cargo carrier, which is supposed to support at least 2 ounces of weight and glide for at least 10 feet, and the air rocket, to be propelled by a sudden burst of air (this one shows the plastic bottle/hose launching mechanism). show less

I had no idea that anteaters stood on their hind legs and roared to get jaguars and pumas to leave them alone. That's gutsy. Or maybe just stupid. Either way, that's the kind of interesting stuff you can learn from this book. Give it a look. show less
