A Paradise called Texas is about a little german girl and her family who move to Texas all the way from their home country of Germany. Her adventures begin the day they leave their German town and continue as her and her family settle down in their new home of Fredericksburg, Texas. Not only are they settling into a new way of life but the language and the inhabitants are something new that adds to the hardship, tragedy, and adventures of a little German girl.

I really liked the book for show more its culture in the way Germans live. Some of the language were German words and, of course, that allowed me to learn some German. I also liked how the little girl's adventures were portrayed and showed what tenacity the little girl had to survive in a new frontier. She's a very smart little girl.

I know I would use this for older children, possibly from third grade and up. I would probably use it for social studies, history, geography and english when learning about different types of books. Using this one as an example for history fiction.

Here We Are by Dorothy Parker - A young couple, just married, are on a train headed to New York for their honeymoon in the 1930s.
The Happy Journey to Trenton and Camden by Thorton Wilder - A family travels to visit the married daughter for what seems to be a happy visit only to find that she almost died giving birth to a stillborn baby. More conversation about the location of a hat than to the tragedy.
A booklet of labs to go with the Holt Biology book.
