Horns of the Devil is the second novel I’ve read by Marc Rainer and I haven’t been disappointed. This novel convinced me that Marc Rainer is not one-novel type of writer.
The narrative is well built with twists and layers. The action builds up steadily and I, for one, cannot see any kind of holes in it. The author gives a lot of information but it seems necessary to understand the plot. There’s nothing too much or too little, just enough.
Mr. Rainer seems to have good knowledge of human show more mind. He knows what makes people tick and what may lie behind their actions. As result, all his characters are believable and well-developed. I like the fact that his main characters are not just white or black. There’s a complexity in each of them that leads to real human beings.
I will refrain from writing a synopsis of the novel because I don’t want to cheat the readers. They should have the pleasure to discover the action themselves. However, I can say that this is a novel I would recommend. This is a well-paced narrative with enough balance between information and action, as well as between seriousness and humor that makes it an interesting read. I have to confess that I was annoyed when I had to put the book down for half an hour. I couldn’t wait to get back to it. It makes for an addictive novel. I am sure I will read Mr. Rainer’s other novels as well. show less

I took this book through kindle unlimited as I promised to read it and review it as part of the Mystery Week Event. For a moment there, I was sorry that I offered – the description of the book made me groan: not another one of these! And then I started to read it – I couldn’t put it down! Honestly, it’s been a long time that I have read such a good book.
Everything is off the scale: fluid narrative, full of twists, concise though, catching. It was informative without being boring. show more Actually, it made me want to be able to read faster so that I could learn more.
The author avoided all boring tropes and his writing was far from conventional. He didn’t stumble once. There wasn’t a moment when I could say: well, he was stuck in an idea here and just droned on.
The characters are not only well developed but they are three dimensional. There is no character that displays only one feature. Of course, Jeff Trask and Lassiter stand out; however, all the others are well fleshed-out. No character is absolutely positive and their actions are not linear. Their language is not annoyingly uniform and the background stories are developed enough to make the reader understand where the people came from.
I would certainly recommend this book – it is clever, exciting and informative (without making you to fall asleep). Moreover, I do hope Mr. Rainer continues to write. I would welcome a new book written with his wit and skill. show less

The Jeff Trask Crime Drama Series has now become one of my favorites! This is no bare to the bones book by any means. It comes fully fleshed out in every aspect of the story. Rather than going with the typical hero lone ranger type; author and former prosecutor Marc Rainer effortlessly breathes life into this realistic crime drama with a true team approach.
Jeff Trask is no doubt the protagonist, but he shines in the midst of great law enforcement personnel working together to solve a show more complex crime. You're going to love this one. show less

This was quite an adventure. I listened to the audiobook version of this and loved every bit of it. The narrator brought every aspect of the story alive and made it that much more enjoyable. The legal thrillers in this series are remarkable with a great protagonist. The team oriented approach dominates much of the story in all its intricate plotting. Excellence.
