ending was pretty unexpected, and yet remained close to what i thought might happen at some point to a few characters. i've heard there's a sequel, so it will be interesting to find out what happens once the shuttle returns to the main ship...
oh. i would have said "does the book compel you to turn to the next page" hovered in the 7-8 range for most of the book. the last three or four chapters pushed that to 11 (LOL)...

This story is beyond intense! Imagine being infected, being akin a living zombie, and then get cured and remember everything you have done... Mind Blowing expert level achieved!
The characters and setting are extremely well rendered. Just that one scene where Nella has to have her shoulder cleaned made me actually lightheaded so vividly it was described.
The evilness of Dr. Pazzo... Damn! The first time he appeared, I was sure he was going to say "Hello Clarisse".
I also loved how the Cured, show more those who once were "monsters", showed more humanity than the Immunes.
Nella and Frank... their story amidst the horrific settings was a ray of brightness.
The ending though! Mind Blowing still at expert level!
I don't often say this but this novel would make one hell of a good movie! show less

This one was a nice change of scenery taking us far from the City and the Cure, in a post-apocalyptic society that has almost reverted to medieval times.
I actually found it better than the second novel though there were many times I wanted to just give up and stop reading. Not because of the story but the priest... that [censured] priest!
I have never felt such a profound, even visceral hatred towards a fictional character. I despised him completely. He represented everything I see as rotten show more in a society, the zealousness, the fanatical obsessive belief that he hold the Truth. It has absolutely nothing to do with religion despite what is portrayed in the story but that type of person that I reject with my very fiber.
Once more, we see how depraved and inhuman people can become while wrapping themselves with the belief that hat they are doing is morally correct. smh
A good story (despite that &^%$ priest)and a ending that hints at what is to come. show less

Although this is described as a standalone, it does help to have read the first novel since it is weaved with it and many events happening in the first story are just briefly touched in this one and not well explained (like Nella and Frank's part in Henry's group being cured).
This story is about the point of view of an Infected before the infection and then after the Cure. It is a gripping story that reveals the ugliness of "humanity" in all it's form, from what happened in the Lodge show more (horrifying and disturbing) to how the Cured are basically nothing more than second-class citizens in a twisted form of segregation from the Immunes.
It did lag on for a bit, and ended with a "WTF?!" ending which, hopefully, hints at things to come.
Still, it is a good "Zombie" novel that has a unusual twist compared to what is found in this literary genre. show less
