Mark H. Lawrence, formerly Principal Trombone of the San Francisco Symphony, is an active soloist, clinician, chamber musician, and teacher. He has performed at the International Brass Conference and the International Trombone Conference, and is a frequent recitalist in this country and abroad. He has been a soloist with the San Francisco Symphony on several occasions and been a guest artist with many other orchestras and concert bands.
Mr. Lawrence is a founding member of the Bay Brass, and is a former member of Chicago's Music of the Baroque, the Empire Brass Quintet, and the Center City Brass Quintet. Mr. Lawrence has performed at the Colorado Music Festival, the Grand Teton Music Festival, the Lieksa Brass Festival in Finland, and the Tanglewood Institute.
A graduate of the Curtis Institute of Music, Mr. Lawrence has given master classes worldwide, and served on the faculties of Boston University ,the Tanglewood Institute, the Rafael Mendez Brass Institute, and Northwestern University. He currently teaches at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music, the Colburn School in Los Angeles, and the Music Academy of the West in Santa Barbara.
Mr. Lawrence's discography includes three solo CDs, 14 chamber music CDs with Summit Brass, Empire Brass, the Center City Brass Quintet, the renowned "Four of a Kind" Trombone Quartet, and Bay Brass: and more than 30 recordings with the San Francisco Symphony.
Together with fellow Bay Brass member Paul Welcomer, he formed MarcoPaulo Publishing, a company specializing in music for the trombone, which features arrangements by each of them, including music from Mr. Lawrence's solo albums.
In his free time he loves open water sculling on the San Francisco Bay. - Birthplace
