Author traveled to the Soviet Union to interview 69 World War II women veteran combat pilots, navigators, and mechanics. The book consists of excerpts from these interviews, in which each woman tells her own story in her own words. Often a photograph of the young woman accompanies the story. Then, at the back of the book there is a series of photographs of the veterans as they looked during the interviews. The stories are absolutely riveting - they deal with combat experiences, but also with show more motivations for volunteering, relationships with male instructors, pilots, and commanders, relationships with other women, difficulties with the Soviet political system, and other informative topics. show less
