Author traveled to the Soviet Union to interview 69 World War II women veteran combat pilots, navigators, and mechanics. The book consists of excerpts from these interviews, in which each woman tells her own story in her own words. Often a photograph of the young woman accompanies the story. Then, at the back of the book there is a series of photographs of the veterans as they looked during the interviews.
