Ember Shane

Royal Zombies??? I was unsure what this book would have in store for me, but I was hooked from the very first page. First of all, I love when the protagonist is adopted. I am not sure why, I just love when it's not perfect family, perfect life kind of situations. Also, the dynamic between Doyle and best friend Chuck is fantastic. They've got each other's back no matter what. Doyle has to go through a lot in this first book, and a lot of it is hard to digest, but it's so very intriguing that show more the science of it doesn't become off putting at all. And the writing was just so great, that I found myself double checking that this was indeed Miss Shane's first novel. I highly recommend this book to anyone who is into paranormal, paranormal-romance, sci-fi, or just really likes zombies. I'm very anxious for book 2 as well, so consider this my plea to the author to give me a release date! :) show less

Heart racing, tears of both relief and despair, confusion and understanding are all things felt while reading this book. I've been a fan of the Doyle Hawthorne series from the first page of the first book, but this book takes it to new levels. First of all, this book got HOTTER! As in, yummy, steamy scenes abound! Also, we've got a lot more action as we've got more characters, a new creature, and more betrayals throughout the story. I have to admit to being confused as to what was going on show more with Addy for much of the book and was so excited when I finally learned what it was. I also admit to a deep affection for Chuck and my heart broke for him during his encounters with Kai. And finally, ah, the big battle scene...I knew something wasn't right but did NOT see what happened coming! It's refreshing in a paranormal novel to not guess ahead of time what's going down. All in all, if you like paranormal stories, if you're a fan of the series, or hell if you just love to read, you must read these books! show less

My thoughts:

I didn’t know how well I would like a book where the main character was a zombie, but I liked this, a lot. It wasn’t a heavy, life altering read. It was just plain FUN! The writing is solid, there are no major errors in grammar or spelling. This is in the New Adult category, and it reads like it belongs there. This is written from in first person from Doyle’s perspective. I said recently that I am not a fan of stories written in first person format, but this worked for me. I didn’t get tired of read the word I over and over, or get so annoyed with Doyle that I couldn’t stand him by the end of the book. You get insight into the other characters of the story through dialogue and actions, and the characters by the end of the story are well developed and left me feeling like I had gotten to really know them. They are young college aged students, and act like it.

This is a trilogy. There was romance in this, but not as much as I thought there would be. I do expect that part of the story to evolve as the rest of the books. This book focused mostly on the transition Doyle went through as he became a Royal Zombie, and it was an interesting transformation I was expecting something similar to the Twilight series. While I do think readers of that series would enjoy this, it felt a little older. There were scenes that reminded me of The Vampire Diaries, the T.V, series, not the books.

I closed the door, shutting Jenny out, and stepped into the tub. Vaguely, I realized I hadn’t showered since my “bed baths” with Addy. I sniffed my armpit. My entire face puckered instantly. Zombie B.O. was definitely the worst. I set the shower to hot and lathered twice.

When I had finished and was fully dressed once again, I opened the door and Jenny shook her head at me. “You didn’t brush your teeth,” she scolded.

Brush my teeth? Was she Kidding? I was pretty sure zombies didn’t have dental plans. It wasn’t like I was going to get a cavity. But I wasn’t able to communicate my thoughts on the subject effectively yet, so I rolled my eyes and reached for the toothbrush on the sink. I squeezed a line of toothpaste on top and after two passes along the front of my teeth, I realized the bristles had all been sheared off. I glared at Jenny.

She covered a smile and said, “Well there’s no reason you can’t at least do a shot of mouthwash.”

I love Ember Shane and her fabulous take on zombie culture. I love the style of writing and how she can so flawlessly paint a picture with her words. This book, if possible, was even better than the first. We are still following Doyle and his adventures since learning of his heritage. We also get to see a bit more about how Addy, Chuck and Kai are dealing with this whole world in this volume. My mind was BLOWN when I got to the big reveal toward the end of the book. And I had moments in the show more telling of this story that brought literal tears to my eyes. I absolutely can not wait for the next book in this series (2015 Ember? You're killing me! ;) ) This is a definite must read for anyone who likes fast paced, grip you from page one type paranormal books. As well as anyone who loves zombie stories. show less
