I read a lot of biographies of comedians and it is often sadly apparent that the famous humourist has, on many occasions, lead a life more lacking in wow factor than my own. By some good fortune, or specific skill, they have obtained fame but, their life is slightly less interesting than watching grass grow - in winter!
Not so in this case, Robert, or Clive Dunn, as we know him, has lead a fascinating life and his period as a member of the Dad's Army team are a mere aside in a life lived to show more the full. Not only do we get an insightful view of the machinations of pre-war music hall, this book gives, what I can believe to be one of the most honest histories of a WW II soldier that I have ever had the privilege to have read.
I recommend this book on all accounts: a thoroughly enjoyable and worthwhile read.
