Susan Merrell

This is a tragic story about a family who adopts a Romanian child and finds themselves torn apart by attachment disorder. While I do believe attachment disorder exists and feel much empathy for those who must confront it, the novel is full of generalizations and stereotypes and fails to balance this exploration of the darker side of adoption with the positive stories that most families experience through adopting a child. The author tries to weave subplots into the main story, but they don't show more blend and flow. I finished the book because of a morbid sense of curiousity about what would happen to the family, but I did not enjoy the story at all and found the writing to be extremely weak and uninspiring. show less
