Verrassend genoeg heeft dit zevende deel van de Rat Queens een nieuwe auteur en een nieuwe tekenaar. Ik heb geen idee hoe deze wisselingen tot stand komen en misschien is dat maar goed ook. In ieder geval hield ik in het begin wel mijn hart vast, wat deze twee nieuwe makers ervan zouden gaan brouwen.

Het begint met een Swamp Special. Oftewel een afgerond verhaal binnen een hoofdstuk. Dit keer worden de blutte Rat Queens ingehuurd om wraak te nemen op de moord op een eenhoorn. Zoals ik show more inmiddels gewend ben, loopt dit heel anders af dan verwacht en dit geeft mij gelijk vertrouwen in deze auteur en tekenaar. Aan de sfeer is niets gewijzigd en de personages zijn stuk voor stuk herkenbaar gebleven.

Sinds het vorige deel heeft Dee goddelijke krachten maar heeft geen zin om alles daar mee op te lossen. Betty gaat tegen haar zin in stoppen met drinken en Maddie moet alles nog leren. Interessante karakterontwikkelingen waar mooi mee gespeeld wordt terwijl ze gevangen worden genomen door de plotsklaps machtige koning Gary, de mislukkeling uit een paar delen hiervoor.

Grappig is dat Maddie, het groentje, weet te ontsnappen en ze weet te bevrijden. Ik genoot ervan dat zij hulp gingen vragen aan Dave die inmiddels Violet (vroeger een Rat Queen) zwanger heeft gemaakt. Ze kan daarom niet mee maar geeft een kaart waarop de plek staat waar ze dat kunnen vinden wat hun zal helpen in de strijd tegen koning Gary. Natuurlijk ligt deze op een plek waar je alleen met heel veel gevaar kan komen. Want tja, niets gaat makkelijk bij de Rat Queens.

De gekkigheid houdt zoals ik gewend ben van de Rat Queens niet op en als Dee haar goddelijk macht gebruikt, krijgt zij een waarschuwing dat dit duistere consequenties kan hebben en Maddie lijkt onderweg te worden verslagen maar die blijkt al naar de juiste plek te zijn geworpen. Hahaha, zo grappig allemaal. En dan vinden ze een nieuwe arm voor Hannah, een zwaard voor Maddie en een hoorn voor Dave. Heerlijk al dit soort mythische elementen in dit waanzinnige verhaal.

Wanneer in de eindstrijd de Rat Queens in het zuur worden opgelost en Dee hun hieruit toch tot leven wekt (want zij kan niet doodgaan) ondanks de eventuele consequenties wordt koning Gary verslagen. En wat een toffe ontknoping als bekend wordt wie er achter dit hele machtsvertoon van koning Gary zit.

Ik ben zeer aangenaam verrast hoe deze strip door anderen is voortgezet. Het verhaal is uitstekend en de tekeningen passen bij de gebeurtenissen en zijn fijn om naar te kijken. Op naar het laatste deel dat ik in bezit heb, deel 8: The God Dilemma. show less

It's been a long time, a long, long time since I read something so unbelievably on the nose and an absolutely ridiculous heap of tropes and made-up profanity that actually pulled it off with such style and aplomb!

D4VE is a robot in a world where humans made robots and robots killed all humans and all life in the galaxy (as far as they were aware), so with nothing else to do robots became comic book stereotypes of humans. Once a mighty warrior, now a lowly officer worker in a classic life on show more the skids tale, D4VE gets one last chance to go big or go home when a new alien invasion comes to town.

This genuinely made me laugh, looks great, and absolutely pulls this ludicrous tone and premise off. Is it another shitty retirement, one last blast, dudes rock-arse ridiculousness? Absofuckinglutely. But it manages to capture the quintessential silly genius that Kevin Smith was always reaching for and rarely grasped. show less

After several volumes of stumbling trying to reclaim the lost heights, Rat Queens goes out (temporarily, at least, it's unclear if the ad in the back for a final graphic novel is actually coming to fruition) with a whimper, in the by far weakest volume yet. The artwork in four of the five issues here collected is the weakest its been in the entire run (the artist can clearly draw, but the characters do not look like themselves at all -- and Betty in particular looks like some kind of goblin show more for some reason). And the story, oh boy. Literally three disjointed and barely related separate stories of "we all fall into a trippy nonsense world mostly against our will". Three. One would have been bad enough. The only respite is an almost equally silly and empty werewolf issue, with a problem that's as quickly resolved as it is introduced. Some good dialogue (unfortunately drowni in the art and nonsensical stories) and the actual ending (the last page or so) are the biggest redeeming features here, but that's really not much. While the earlier volumes since the soft reboot has been a slight disappointment for me in their lack of direction and scope, at least it felt fun. Some small handfuls of dialogue and the end twist aside, this wasn't. For a potentially final volume of what was once a pretty great series, that's saddening more than anything else. show less

I found the concept interesting and the artwork was great, but there was something I just couldn’t get into; the story. It’s about robots living on earth as humans once did, acting like humans and having similar problems. D4VE2 was a hero in this society but why? It felt like I was reading a soap opera. Then two human female appeared in a capsule. And this piqued my interest some. We learn where they are from and why the humans were eliminated, but still wasn’t for me.
