This was a rather surprising short story, available for free on Tor.com

I have a bit of trouble reading fantasy most of the time. Certain books, such as [b: The Girl Who Circumnavigated Fairyland in a Ship of Her Own Making|9591398|The Girl Who Circumnavigated Fairyland in a Ship of Her Own Making (Fairyland, #1)|Catherynne M. Valente|https://d.gr-assets.com/books/1388179691s/9591398.jpg|6749837] tend to rub me the wrong way. An overabundance of magic, a slightly irreverent tone and quirky show more characters... it just doesn't do it for me anymore. Largely I think this is because I read a bit too much fantasy growing up. All of that having been said... this short story hit none of those marks. It was utterly delightful.

I thoroughly adored the world that was created. While a little girl wanting a pony for her birthday is rather old news and overused now, subverting it by having her get a demon instead? Pretty darn amusing. Watching her go from hating her little hornless Dark Lord to adoring him, the trouble of having a first pet... I loved it all.

I'd like to read more in this universe, truly. It was such a well developed world for how short the story was.

Hilarious short story - but poor Ix’thor! Damn people like Becky anyway.

The story is unusual and told completely tongue in cheek. Despite the mini dark lord only having so many lines, it was easy to get attached to the funny thing. My favorite part was probably the description of his rearranging the cage.

The author tells the story well and clearly has a sense of humor. Bravo.
An amazing short story that I ran across on Tor.com. This was the story of a little girl who doesn't get a pony for her birthday but instead gets a mini Demon. This guys is hilarious and just downright awesome! I have to admit I was really sad how this ended but the story was great and I can't wait to check out this author now.
I do love short SF stories. This would have fit right in, in [b:The Unknown|2338843|The Unknown|Donald R. Bensen|https://d.gr-assets.com/books/1233547682s/2338843.jpg|2345527]. Thanks to this free sample, I will look for more of the author's work.
