This is a title in the Time-Life The Old West series. Organized int the usual Time-Life style of the 1970's, this volume is full of photographs, drawings, maps and paintings that depict famous lawman and outlaws. It is a truly beautiful volume.
The opening chapter outlines the culture of the gun and the men who made a living with it. In this chapter, he describes the development of the western revolver and rifle with coloured pictures of many examples.
In other chapters he gives brief show more biographies of some of the men & women such as Belle Starr, William Bonney, Pat Garret, Bill Tighman, Bat Masterson and the Earp family who made these stories happen. He also explains some of the background to the feuds and range wars such as the Lincoln County War and the Johnson County War.
There is a very extensive bibliography attached for those who wish to look for further reading on the subject. show less

In the ongoing battle between History and Hollywood, this book deals a definitive blow on the side of History, showing that you don't need special effects or a fictional love interest thrown into the mix in order to make History fun, exciting, and interesting!
An uninspired trot through the high points of the Great American Gunfight. Useful for game design, and basis for further, more focused reading.
A speciman of the West, a gunfighter could be a lawman, bandit or wanton killer, but he would put up his life for what he believed in as justice of the Old West.
