I read this in a few days. Would have been only one day but my pesky family kept 'needing' things like food, attention, whatever. Did I mention they are pesky?
A favorite part was this interaction:
"They have Star Trek where you are from but not corn dogs?" Mara asked.
"They have Star Trek in every realm."
Oh yea, this appealed to every geek part of my being, and it just kept getting weirder, better, wilder, and more appealing with every line. I'm happily a fan and anxiously awaiting to read show more more of Mara and the crazy alternate realm she's immersed in. Ping is quite the character no matter which realm, and all involved are just so intriguing. I mean, what would YOU do if something like this happened? I do know I don't like flying and here's one more reason on my 'I'm not paranoid enough' list to make me think twice next time I must!
Well done, Mr Moneypenny, well done! show less

Broken Realms is an awkward book for me to review. On the one hand it has an innovative, imaginative magic system that is well explained and well thought-out. It has an interesting premise of alternate realities bleeding into ours that lead to interesting scenes such as the man who laid an egg, or the baker who can turn into a cloud of dust.
And on the other it was a tedious, slow, boring book to read. While it gets to the monsters and mayhem very quickly, it then stops to take us on a show more lingering bike ride through Oregon. There are scenes of repairing game boys, radios, ditto machines. The characters are flat and one-dimensional in this book about alternate dimensions.
There was potential in the plot, but potential that was never fully realized. show less

I really enjoyed [Broken Realms(The Chronicles of Mara Lantern, Book1)] by [D.W. Moneypenny]. The combination of a real life disasters causing a crossover of dimensions was great. The character of Mara was intelligent and a little on the snarky side. The plot was very character centered and that drove the action. Sometimes there may have been too much detail of events but that was only a speed bump and nothing to really detract from the quality of the book.

It was nice seeing Portland as the backdrop for the story. I’m from the Pacific Northwest and have visited Portland quite a bit so it made the scenes more meaningful. There are some really great ideas and a very interesting premise. The plot moves along at a brisk pace. I was sometimes jarred out of the story by how some of the phenomenon was introduced into the story and people’s reaction to it but overall this was a fun, entertaining read and well written. I received a free copy of show more this book in exchange for an honest review. show less
