Interesting chapter on two books on Turkey by Lady Mary Wortley Montague (1860s) and Lady Curzon (1880s) - the first sympathetic & understanding, the second condemning lazy and uncivilized Turks. The book argued that this showed changing attitudes to the "other" as colonialism progressed - from admiration & acknowledgement that west could learn from them, to the colonial memsahib. Fair enough, and borne out by eg White Mughals, but you could also find either attitude in a sample of holiday show more makers or expats today. I would have liked some consideration of sales figures or something to see if both books were a good indication of what the reading public wanted at that time. show less
