Rudolf Besier (1876–1942)

An interesting play with some powerful scenes. The empty life the Barrett siblings led, and the twisted reason for it were incredibly portrayed. This edition is illustrated with black and white photos from the stage production starring Katherine Cornell. The most amazing characters were Elizabeth - trying to spare Robert (Browning) from the anger of her father - and Edward Barrett himself - hating his children and himself because he fears his own lust, and the children are the living show more reminder. I was especially struck by his absolute terror of ever being wrong! Robert Browning comes as a cool breath of sanity into the stuffy life on Wimpole Street. I can't believe this play is as old as it is! show less
