In het voorwoord geeft prof. Dowden al aan dat hij zich in dit boek beperkt tot de literaire bronnen. En daar gaat het al mis, omdat de heidense literaire bronnen schaars zijn en zeer gekleurd. Bijv. bibliotheken zijn er vol geschreven over de waarde van de Edda als bron voor daadwerkelijk historisch heidendom. Het is duidelijk dat prof. Dowden zich niet al te veel gelegen laat aan de discussies die zich op dat front afspelen. Zijn bronnen voor de Germaans heidense gebruiken zijn niet show more slecht, maar daarmee wel beperkt.

Toch geeft het boek een leuke inkijk in andere heidense bronnen, zoals de Griekse en Romeinse en enkele Baltische en Slavische heidense gebruiken. Ook zijn bespreking over wat we nu kunnen verstaan onder 'bron', 'berg' en 'heilig bos' vond ik informatief. Helaas kan Dowden de ondertitel van zijn boek niet waarmaken. show less
