Beautiful illustrations and simple short sentences make this book perfect for young children who love horses. I was more impressed with the illustrations then the story. I think that, especially for young children who love horses but haven't grown up around them like the author did, there may be a feeling of "why are you being mean to that poor horse?". Especially the illustration of the girl swatting the horse with a branch, and the "I cracked the whip loudly right behind him. Boy, did he show more jump!". I know those are normal horse-training things, but I know I would've seen it differently when I was a young child. show less
