This is purported to be one of the best biographies of Wagner. Millington was certainly thorough with his warts and all approach. I'm not an opera fan and students of musicology may have a greater appreciation. Plenty of musicians are arrogant, self-important and wildly extravagant, but Wagner takes the cake. He comes across as a thoroughly unpleasant character who abused his friends, family and patrons. Perhaps he would have been more appealing if I liked his music, but the Valkyries can show more send him straight off. show less
