I'm a fan of DK books.
They're simple. They're informative. They're cheap. If your child is too young to read, they're perfectly good read-aloud books.
What more can you ask for when stocking your kid's library?
This book features a female police officer (a nice touch) going about her (mostly uneventful) daily routine. She does some emergency traffic direction, tells her nephew about the various ways cops get around, helps a kid get home, and captures an escaped bear.
The last one is a little show more unrealistic - I mean, how often do bears escape from the zoo, anyway? - but it's well-written enough that I can overlook that part. show less

DK Readers: Jobs People Do -- A Day in a Life of a Firefighter (Level 1: Beginning to Read) by Linda Hayward

As you might expect, this book takes us through a day in a firefighter's life. The sentences are short and direct. This makes them easy to read, and it also makes the book more exciting.
The fire in the book (you knew there had to be one) is not especially scary, and is dealt with show more quickly. More detail is given to the more usual routine - cleaning, taking a class on a tour to talk about fire safety, that sort of thing.
I very much recommend this book for small children. show less

A curious little kitten lives in a safe, cozy closet with her mother and siblings. But being curious, she wants to know about the light outside the door and how it got there. So one day when the others are sleeping, she goes out exploring.
This is a very cute book about curiosity and exploration. The little kitten is adorable in action and in illustrations. Kids will enjoy the repetition found in the book, such as the pit pat of the kitten's steps or her questioning what else is behind each show more door. The edition I have is the little Little Golden Books, so the miniature pages are a novelty as well. show less

Every now and then my daughter picks this up, and it's always a reading breakthrough of sorts. Very nicely done. Each section is based on a sound. They start with simple single letter sounds, and then get more complex.
