Set in late 18th century Jamaica, we follow a group of boys as they undergo a rite of passage and become Young Warriors. They are sent on a traditional hunt after they pass the test where they spend a night out in the forest. They encounter some red coats - British soldiers and need to warn their community about their presence in order to avoid losing their home and everyone they love as has happened to other communities in the area.
This was such an interesting read! I'd say that the show more feeling is somewhat similar to something like Enid Blyton's Famous Five, even if the circumstances are completely different and the stakes much higher. It's been a good few years since I read those but it brought up similar feelings to what I remember about those. I loved the descriptions of the oneness with nature and how the Maroons lived their lives. Although their attitudes were maybe a little frustrating at times (understandable as they are young after all! And it's definitely to be expected) I found myself rooting strongly for the boys throughout! A fun read and a great way to expose younger readers (I'd say this skews YA or maybe even middle grade) to history from a non British perspective. show less

Apparently this is the first truly West Indian novel, so I must read it.
