This book is NOT really a folk remedy encyclopedia. Every chapter is about a particular illness or problem (i.e. asthma, heart disease, food poisoning, IBS, etc.), it tells what the symptoms are, what foods are recommended and what is not, same for supplements, suggest other medical treatments and then the 'folk' remedy is given at the end of each section as a sort of aside. All the information is basic and not harmful, though none of it is very enlightening for anyone who has ever read an show more issue of Prevention Magazine. For a similar compendium that is more informative and more geared towards actual 'home' or 'folk' remedies that may actually work, I'd look to Andrew Weil's books. show less

It is worth the $5.00 or $10.00 for ad hoc health insurance. Used in conjunction with other similar works, it is useful enough for government work. As a collections book, I would not recommend it. If one specializes in homeopathic remedies, by all means acquire it to augment other sources.
This was an older book, but I still learned a lot from it about things I needed to know, especially since I am now in those early senior years! I easily understood most of it. I was able to take notes and realize what I need to work on and improve. I highly recommend this to someone who wonders what to do in those golden years.
Detailed recommendations for foods, food supplements and lifestyle changes to enhance health and fight illness, particularly during the older years. I've frequently dipped into it, and finally read it from cover to cover. The cover is a bit '90s American' but the content is very good.
