This book is quite good for learning traditional American knitting of the mid-20th-century variety. I used it to learn to knit socks and gloves when I was in my late teens. The description of knitting with dpns, socks (turning heels, afterthought heels, kitchener stitch, etc.) are very clearly illustrated. It has some very nice lace doilies and edgings, mittens and gloves in all sizes (and complete step-by-step lessons in making both 2- and 4-needle versions). The women's garments tend to be show more very 1940s fashionable; the men's and children's less datable. I've mostly used it for smaller items with the occasional vest; all the patterns have been easy to understand and worked up well. show less
This is the book I inherited from my grandmother, and used to teach myself to crochet after the first time she taught me. Clear illustrations for every stitch; many projects, especially in lace, which is where crochet really shines.
Transcription of info from original 1940's dustjacket of this book follows my comments. (My copy is light chocolate brown with beige ball of yarn & needles.)

I have original dustjacket for this book, but in very poor condition--crumpled and torn. Maybe someone can find, scan & post one in better shape, so other owners can print out copies for their books!

(Sometimes ebay sellers make their own pix for items; keep checking & please let me know, so I might update this record.)

FRONT COVER: (Top show more under title is red; middle under description quoted below is deep olive green. B&W photos of ten items are in two rows between red & green parts.)
