I love Roper's approach to teaching writing to college students. Like Kelly Gallagher, who argues for a similar approach for high school students, Roper is not arguing for an abandonment of forms and structure as we teach. Rather, that students do not learn to be good writers by imitating bad writers. Like Gallagher, he encourages teachers to be writing themselves as they give assignments. They both guide students to discover through imitation, the forms that work best for the topic at hand. show more To be fair, it is a more inductive approach, which some students will find frustrating to learn, and some teachers will find frustrating to grade. I believe, however, that this approach will actually be better for students learning from humans, rather than AI driven learning and teaching. show less
