Wagner's book of recipes from the Depression years was reminiscent of my grandmother's 'Five Roses' 1905 cookbook. Many of these recipes in Wagner's book focus on similar aspects of 'use what's available' and emphasizes affordability.
Some recipes in Wagner's book are very amusing, for example, All-Day Fried Fish (page 68 in my edition). This recipe opens with: "Go to your favourite fishing spot and spend the better part of the day fishing".
Overall, recipes are easy, quick prep for the most show more part. One can't assume everything will taste wonderful, or even be a balanced meal. Seasoning and balanced meals have changed so much over the years. Despite these caveats, kids will find easy recipes for sprucing up their cooking talent and impoverished students will perhaps appreciate the frugality. show less
