This book, over the years, has really had quite a work-out. I can't recall how many times the Gingerbread Man story was read...but probably many hundreds....frequently many times on the one night ....with the chant of "Run run as fast as you can.....you can't catch me, I'm the gingerbread man". And the real Princess...and Goldilocks....ah it brings back generations of memories! But the illustrations here by Peter Utton are just outstanding. I love his work. Lovely free flowing watercolours show more ...often with the pencil lines or the charcoal showing through but he captures the mood perfectly; from the sly look on the fox as he persuades the gingerbread man to stand on his (the fox's) head.....to the umbrella held by the wise little pig as the wolf plops into the boiling pot of water. Utton just nails it. He's great. And, whilst I really like the illustrations, I must also give credit to Georgie Adams. The basic storyline is pretty much fixed and honed by generations of re-telling but keeping to the traditional story whilst modernising the words and making it fun and interesting is no mean feat. Georgie achieves this with stunning effectiveness. A great book for kids .....and hmmmm for me too. I give it five stars. show less
A sweet little fox loves chickens, but not to eat -- just to be friends. He becomes a nanny for baby chicks, and defends them when his brothers and sisters come to eat them. I usually don't like stories about foxes eating other anthropomorphic animals, but this one actually takes that and makes it the theme, which I appreciate. I could see extending this to real-life bullying situations, for instance. At first I thought it seemed unfinished, since the foxes just decide to find somewhere else show more to hunt rather than changing their ways entirely, but sometimes that's the best you can ask for in real life. The takeaway is that it's okay for Arnold to be sweet and sensitive and a nanny and to protect the little chicks, which is awesome. show less
In eight interconnected short stories, Zara, Ziggy and Zoe - three little witches who live together in Cauldron Cottage, in the Magic Woods - keep house (using magic, of course!), attend Wizard Wink's school (which moves about the Woods, from day to day), and play with wizard boys Max and Mick, troll children Tig, Tag and Tog, and sulky fellow witch, Melissa. The preparations for their upcoming Halloween party, which provides a running theme throughout the collection, as responses to show more invitations (sent in the first story) come in at the close of each selection, culminate in the big evening itself, in which all the residents of the Magic Woods gather for a festive holiday celebration.
The Three Little Witches Storybook seems to be one of a number of such themed story collections from British author/illustrator team Georgie Adams and Emily Bolam - see also: The Three Little Pirates and The Three Little Princesses - and is quite an enchanting little brew! The eight stories here all work together, as one big narrative, but can also be read in sequential installments, making it a wonderful book for beginning readers. The text is simple, but engaging, and Bolam's artwork is appealing, in a cute, cartoon-like way. Recommended to young readers who are looking for witchy reads with more sweetness than scare! show less

Tätäkin on tullut luettua useampaan kertaan iltasaduksi tyttärelleni. Nimet olen vaihtanut lasteni ja lasteni serkkujen nimiksi. Luvut ovat lyhyitä, juuri sopivia iltasaduiksi. Kuvitus sopii hyvin kirjaan. Iloinen ja hauska seikkailu, jossa on sopivasti jännitystäkin.
