Wolf’s Mate by Celia Kyle
Paranormal romantic suspense on the light side of the genre. 1st in a series.
This is my first book by this author. I thoroughly enjoyed the story, the pacing, the dialog and mostly the light-hearted, tongue-in-cheek type humor. I will absolutely read more of this author.
I could list dozens of examples of the humor and funny one liners. The heroine is a cat shifter. A cougar. She scolds her inner cat for not helping by swearing not to go to the pet store for show more catnip. Hilarious.
“Just see if she bought catnip at the pet store. Just see.
That assumed she made it out of the hot mess alive so she could go to the pet store. If she had a Magic 8-ball, her fortune would be “outlook not so good.”
“The cougar told her she was a big fat liar from Liarton, smack-dab in the middle of the great state of Liar-isiana, living on Lying Avenue.”
Very entertaining.
I received a copy of this book from NetGalley. I also purchased a copy to gift. show less

Despite He Ain't Lion's rocky and repetitive start, it delivers the funny in spades with inventive swearing and crazy canibalistic thoughts, and dishes up a sexy, but self-conscious, plus-sized main character who upon meeting and bedding the alpha male of a lion shifter pride, transforms from a human female into a fierce and hungry shapeshifting alpha lioness. And there are no premature I Love Yous with the Happy Ever After!
I enjoyed Maya's transformation difficulties. She has no idea what is happening to her.
Even her cannibalistic thoughts are funny. She doesn't act on them so it's okay to laugh.
When Maya's finally clued into her situation she utters some inventive swearing at the man responsible.
But she can't stay mad at him for long.
I'm grateful that there are no cheesy I Love Yous, just "everlasting love, someday… just not quite yet" which is far more realistic after what she thought would be one wonderfully energetic one-night stand to get over her unappreciative ex-boyfriend. An extra chapter at the end would've been nice to rub the ex's face in it with her sexy new mate. Am I the only one to like a bit of revenge in my romance?
Although I'd like to continue with the series, I'm holding off because the price for the next story is too high for the number of pages - 44 pages for £2! (I'd want at least 100 pages for that) - so I'll wait. show less

the pushin’. At least, that’s what their gazes told her. Hell, even some of the ladies were giving Maya the same lustful glances. But tonight was not the night for lovin’ with the female persuasion, though. Maybe another time…
[...]
She had big hips, big thighs, and big breasts, all of which added up to a big woman.
I enjoyed Maya's transformation difficulties. She has no idea what is happening to her.
Reaching the back section of the store, she stared at the plethora of beef before her. And it had to be beef. Because chicken, fish, and pork, just weren’t gonna cut it. Part of her balked at her sudden, insatiable craving for meat, but the other part, the stronger part that seemed to be prowling, dragging its nails inside her brain, told her to grab it all and eat it raw, bathe in the blood to feed her hunger. Okay, ew, just yuck.
[...]
Maya growled at anyone that got too close. Her food. All hers!
Even her cannibalistic thoughts are funny. She doesn't act on them so it's okay to laugh.
As the smell of raw meat tempted her, called to her, she could hear the heartbeat of every passing shopper. And they all looked so delicious , reminded that growly-prowly sensation in her mind, seemingly interested in several of the individuals perusing the produce section. Maya licked her lips and swallowed the pooling saliva in her mouth [...] “Carly, there’s something really, really wrong with me. Like, really.” She knew she hadn’t just woken up this morning, and decided, “Hey, let’s be a cannibal today. Yay!”
When Maya's finally clued into her situation she utters some inventive swearing at the man responsible.
“You ass-sniffing, butt-crack licking , litter box-using fuckhole!”
But she can't stay mad at him for long.
“You are absolutely perfect, just the way you are.”
“Heh. You ain’t lyin’.”

CEO and alpha-wolf (he’s a werewolf! he’s a billionaire! he’s alpha plus plus!) Grant commandeers lowly secretary Rachel to use her pre-law degree to look over a contract. It’s preposterous, right? Who cares! Rachel is his mate! And now he has to keep her safe from the vampires that want to kill over this shady contract deal. However, Rachel is hiding some secrets of her own– namely, she’s a witch! And werewolves hate witches!
It’s a short and fast-paced read that hits all the show more good shifter marks: plenty of danger and action, lots of hot sexy times, over the top alpha behavior, etc. etc. Celia Kyle also knows how to weave a humorous, slightly sarcastic tone throughout her books that makes them fun to read. show less

Shifter romances are some of my all-time favorite paranormal reads, and I found WOLF’S MATE by Celia Kyle to be a solid entrance into a new world of furry characters. It wasn’t my favorite shifter romance, but I had a great time getting to know the cast of Kyle’s newest series, Shifter Rogues.
To summarize: SHOC Team One is on a mission to uncover proof of FosCo and its controlling intrest holder, Eric Foster, funding United Humanity show more (UH)—A terrorist organization whose goal is to wipe shifter out of existence. In staking out FosCo, Declan and the team familiarize themselves with the late nights cougar shifter Abby Carter spent auditing FosCo. One night she accidentally stumbles upon more information than she was supposed too and catches the eyes of UH. Now she must rely on Declan and his crew to keep her alive while they uncover more dirt on the shady dealings of FosCo.
The shifters of WOLF’S MATE were all so much fun! I enjoyed the antics of Team One, and felt great pity for Birch, the team’s Alpha responsible for keeping the hunky hooligans in line. Honestly, I had more love for the team than the main characters. Not to say I had issues with them, they just didn’t make a huge impact.
Sparks were flying the minute Declan laid eyes on Abby, there was lots of heat, but the romance was slow-moving. So slow I wanted to yell, “JUST FUCK ALREADY!!,” but life, danger, and Declan’s cockblocking teammates had other plans. There was lots of heat with little action, which made this reader a bit cranky at times.
WOLF’S MATE was an entertaining read with a fun crew of shifters. There was oodles of humor a girl couldn’t help chuckle along with and the loveable shifters of Team One left me itching for more. I recommend shifter fans to snag a copy for themselves, and cannot wait to read more of the Shifter Rogue series!
