George Keate (1729–1797)

I kept running across this book (first published in 1788) while working through charging records for early American libraries: it was quite a popular read, in its day! When I found there was a modern edition, I just had to hunt it up and read it. It holds up surprisingly well, and still makes for very absorbing reading. The introductory matter and notes in the Leicester University Press edition are useful and well done, but I do wish that the editors had included more illustrations from the show more original editions, and in better reproductions.

Minor quibbles aside, I'm glad that this edition was published, and recommend Keate's book to anyone with an interest in late 18th-century travel narratives. show less
