Superman vs. Hollywood: How Fiendish Producers, Devious Directors, and Warring Writers Grounded an American Icon by Jake Rossen
I love Superman. One of my goals as a reader/watcher is to read all the novels, fictional and non-fictional that have been written surrounding the Superman mythos, and watch all the animated/live action shows as well (not to mention read all the comics, one of the things I'm very far behind on).
SO, I'm probably not the most unbiased when it comes to Superman stuff. I've found good in the third, fourth and Superman Returns movies, and I loved, loved Lois and Clark: The New Adventures of show more Superman despite the frogs.
All that said this was an interesting book. I thought that I knew most of the problems that have plagued every Superman incarnation from the 50s 'til today. But I most definitely didn't. I didn't know things like the fact that nearly every halfway decent white guy actor in Hollywood seemed to be up for what finally turned out to be the Superman Returns movie. And other stuff even better than that (I would have loved to see Kevin Smith's Superman movie).
Honestly, the biggest problem I had with the book was when it was published. Since it was published in '08, it doesn't have the last four seasons of Smallville, not to mention good background stuff on the Man of Steel movie).
A great behind the scenes book, that even gave me some new things to read and watch. show less
