Hegemonic masculinity is accentuated through contact sports such as Australian Rules football. As such, it provides a training ground in which masculinity is learnt through its tolerance of violence and aggression. This study aimed to explore the reasons SANFL footballers play with pain and injury, in order to affect cultural and sub-cultural change that will ultimately benefit the long-term health of elite Australian Rules footballers.
