Amazing. What carries the book is the direct and unsentimental language, and the way Barnes succeeds at creating childhood subjectivity but suggests an adult voice that was clearly wrought in childhood. A brief biography, it covers formative years living in Alaska and Massachusetts with her father and sister and ends abruptly. It doesn't add up to any sort of whole--a refreshing stance considering the didactic nature of so much contemporary memoir.
