Be-Ro

Wish I could date this booklet - from the cover photo around the 1950s, I would guess. All the basic recipes which are still appearing today, with sepia photos. A copy of one of the more recent editions of the Be-Ro book is a sine qua non of any working cookery book collection. The introduction is a delightful period piece : 'The woman who can cook well and bake well has every reason and every right to be proud of her cooking. In ninety-nine cases out of a hundred she has a happy home, show more because good cooking means good food, and good food means good health. There's no more pleasing sight than that of a happy family around a well-stocked tea-table, all enjoying their food ... your doctor will tell you that good, wholesome food is worth more than all the medicine in the world, especially for hungry, growing children.' show less

I have two Be-Ro Home Recipe books in my collection. I haven't dated this but from the cover it is 1970s, given to my by a dear neighbour when I was in my teens. I was delighted when my son was provided with a later edition in his school cookery class a few years ago - delivered by a wonderful lady who insisted the kids did NOT need 'Food Technology', they needed to know how to make a good dinner. Hurrah! I will be getting a copy of the latest 44th edition (available August 2011) for my show more daughter and each of my nieces and nephews. My daughter and I refer to this little 3.5" x 7.75" tome regularly for basic sponge, pastry, pancakes, toad in the hole, etc., each recipe accompanied by a little colour photograph, giving another clue to the era, with free use of glace cherries, angelica and piped cream. show less

Great little baking book. Tried out many of the recipes and liked most. Now I've copied a few into my own 'favorite recipes', I've read enough.
