This project explores the implementation of project-based learning (PBL) and inquiry
based learning (IBL) into the high school general music classroom. The study took place
over the course of two years and implemented two different levels of the PBL
curriculum, an open approach and a blended approach. The goal of the project was to
improve student engagement in general music for students with and without prior
musical knowledge and skills. The project reveals great potential for PBL in the music
curriculum, but also identifies significant problems and challenges with its
