Aikido is a martial art developed by Japanese master Morihei Ueshiba in the early part of the 20th century. It is based on natural movements and the unity of mind and body, which combine to harmonize with the actions of an opponent and to restrain or throw them by utilizing the power of their own energy. The practice of aikido is now an increasingly popular discipline associated with many physical and spiritual benefits: as well as controlling an opponent, it is an excellent way to develop strength, supplleness, stamina and mental and emotional harmony.

This beautifully presented and accessible book is a fully illustrated guide to the history, philosophy and practice of this extraordinary art. Using over 500 specially commissioned color photographs, together with comprehensive text from one of to the most respected teachers working today, this is a perfect guide for anyone beginning aikido, or for experienced practitioners who want to go further.

The book begins by outlining the traditions, etiquette, principles and objectives of akido, then discusses how it sharpens the mind and body, and expains the preparation, breathing techniques and warm-up exercises. The core of the book is a clearly photographed step-by-step guide to the basic posture, falls and movements of aikido, all demonstrated by expert teaachers. Advanced features include guidance on handling and using weapons, kicking techniques and some self-defense applications.

With advice on choosing a dojo (teaching school) and a wealth of uselful contacts, Aikido is the definitive manual on learning these powerful, yet graceful exercises.

Peter Brady started practicing aikido in 1969. In 1970 he joined the Birmingham Athletic Institute and attained Shodan in 1973. He was recoginized as Shodan by Chiba Sensei in 1976, NIdan in 1978, and Sandan in 1984 with Shibata Sensei. In 1987 Peter saw a promotion to Yondan by Chiba Sensei. In 1996, Peter was promoted to the rank of Godan and then to Rokudan (6th Dan) in 2003 and is currently a Shidoin (Hombu recognized senior teacher) with the United Kingdom Aikikai. He also holds the position of of Senior Coach and Children's Coach within the British Aikido Board. Peter is the chief instructor for six independently run clubs around the United Kingdom. As a result of Chiba Sensei's influence Peter has a strong interest in the weapon side of aikido and also in the art of sword drawing known as Iaido. He holds the rank of Sandan with the British Kendo Federation and as well as teaching weekly classes, he also runs monthly seminars. These are geared to include general courses, instructors' and Fukushidoin courses (Seniors only), and weapons. Peter's previously published work includes contributions to The Practical Encyclopedia of Martial Arts by Fay Goodman (also published by Lorenz Books).
