I liked this book a bit more than the previous couple, but I still felt like it was only an average book.

To start with the plot. There's a hidden treasure in Cassidy's town. Or in the woods around it at least. And everyone seems to have gone crazy over it. Of course, Cassidy doesn't find out about the little treasure hunt until Tommy Green, the guy at the main land's docks gets beaten to within an inch of his life and put into a coma so that his brain can heal.

That brings a weird group of people together. Cassidy, Erica (oy, she's back), a pair of twin brothers with a sad past and vastly different additudes, and Lizzie, the bartender and owner of Lizzie's Tavern. They're all trying to figure out who hurt Tommy (which no one can understand since everyone in town seems to like him). And what they find totally blows their mind, not to mention spurs some wicked insane and complicated plans to solve the mystery and catch the bad guy.

My first problem with the novel was the librarian. Even in 1999, when this book was published, I'm pretty sure that most of the librarians I know would never, ever have given the information about the checked out books and who checked them out to anyone but the patron who did the checking (or the authorities with the right legal papers presented of course). Not even if the librarian was a very 'helpful' one, and the person asking was known to the librarian, or 'nice'. Nope. It would never happen, even back then.

And unfortunately the mystery was just a bit too predictable in places, although I was guessing a bit more during this one vs. the previous ones.

An interesting and twisty plot and a lot of interesting psychological stuff. Solid three stars.

Psychics, yay, okay, okay, I shouldn't be so sarcastic in a book review, and once I got by the Psychic aspect, the mystery wasn't too too bad. It's the sixth in the Cassidy James series, and I thought it was the weakest so far.

The story is that Maggie, the ex who went to Paris to be with a dying and then not so much dying person, needs Cassidy's help. Maggie is having dreams of murders that seem to then happen. Although Maggie's not sure which is coming first, her dreams or the murders.

So, because it's fiction, Maggie goes to Cassidy and asks her to go undercover as a patient in her group therapy group. That's how the two victims were connected, though their relatives who were both in the group. Yes, where could that go wrong for Cassidy? Then, weirdly enough Cassidy is also introduced as Maggie's friend to Maggie's secretary.

There are other spoiler-y parts of the mystery father in as well that didn't quite make sense. At least they wouldn't have in the real world.

I guess it's mostly the 'romance' part of the novel that wore on me the most as the novel went on. I do understand that in the real world people go from relationship to relationship, and sometimes back to someone, etc. but... these novels aren't real, they're fictional, and that brings with it a whole different set of 'rules'.

The mystery again wasn't that surprising either unfortunately. I guessed the answer to who did it even earlier than in Fifth Wheel, and that did take away a little bit of the anticipation and suspense of the story for me.

Still, it was a solidly put together story, just predictable.
