Papa Bear and Little Bear return in this third picture-book adventure, following upon The Bear's Song and The Bear's Sea Escape, this time finding themselves involved in a marvelous circus escapade. Waking up from his winter hibernation, Little Bear discovers that Papa Bear is missing and goes in search of him, hunting through the forest and various underground caverns, and eventually tracking him down at the circus. Here he gets involved in the act, joining Papa Bear, and eventually, Mama show more Bear and Teeny Tiny Bear as well, as performers. In the end, the entire Bear family returns to their forest home...

Originally published in France as Poupoupidours, this entertaining picture-book is somewhat of a departure from its two predecessors. In addition to the hunt-and-find aspect of the story, present in the two earlier titles, in The Bear's Surprise we see cut-outs on each page, providing Little Bear (and through him, the reader) with visual clues as to the direction he should go in his search. Another difference here is that it is Little Bear searching, rather than his Papa. Finally, Mama Bear and a new (presumably?) sibling are introduced here, whereas in the previous stories, Papa Bear and Little Bear seemed to be living on their own. Although still quite engaging - I love Chaud's artwork, and find his bears charming! - I thought that this third Papa Bear/Little Bear picture-book was a little weaker than the previous titles, largely because it felt like the surprise appearance of Mama Bear and Teeny Tiny Bear was shoehorned into the very end of the story, leading to a somewhat fractured narrative. Leaving that aside - I subtracted a half star as a result - this is still likely to please young reader/listeners who enjoyed Benjamin Chaud's previous forays into this ursine world, and it is to them that I would recommend it.

Papa Bear is just settling in for his winter's hibernation when he realizes that Little Bear, who has run off chasing an enticing bee, is nowhere to be found. Setting out to find his wayward son, our paternal ursine hero traverses the forest, the city, and a busy opera house before finally finding what he is looking for. His 'song,' when he finds himself unexpectedly up on stage, may not have much appeal for the human attendees, but Little Bear finds it very appealing. Little Bear, for his show more part, has something to share - something very sweet! - with his father...

Originally published in France as Une chanson d'ours, this delightful first adventure featuring Papa Bear and Little Bear pairs an engaging text with absolutely gorgeous artwork. The book is quite tall, even for a picture-book, and each two-page spread depicts a busy world, whether that be a forest or a city. Young readers and listeners will enjoy finding Little Bear on each page, and will likewise enjoy Papa's search. There is so much to look at here, and so many humorous details, from the two foresters who leave behind their saw to climb a tree, when they see Papa Bear, to the boy with bear-hat that Papa Bear initially mistakes for Little Bear. The colors in The Bear's Surprise are vivid and deep, but they're also subtle, and beautifully matched and contrasted with one another. All in all, this was a real pleasure, and more than enough to convince me to track down subsequent stories about this ursine duo. Recommended to anyone looking for beautifully-illustrated picture-books, or children's stories featuring bears and/or reassuring father-child reunions.

The Bear family returns in this fourth seek-and-find picture-book devoted to their adventures, following upon The Bear's Song, The Bear's Sea Escape and The Bear's Surprise. Bored and sulky, and tired of having all the attention focused on Teeny Tiny Bear, Little Bear sets off on his own, looking for a big adventure. He finds what he is looking for when he discovers an empty old mansion in a clearing of his woodland home, and has fun exploring. Then the mansion is invaded by monsters! What's show more a little bear to do? If only his family were nearby...

Originally published in France as Pompon ours dans les bois, this delightful title from author/illustrator Benjamin Chaud is a worthy follow-up to its predecessors, offering an engaging and humorous tale, as well as an engrossing seek-and-find experience, as readers search for Little Bear on the (very) tall pages. The artwork itself is quite appealing, with adorable stylized animal figures, and beautifully realized background scenes. The two-page spread showing the interior view of the mansion was a particular pleasure, as I enjoy that style of cross-section illustration. The conclusion of the tale, in which Little Bear and Teeny Tiny Bear each tell the other of their experiences, will have readers and listeners ending the tale with a chuckle. Recommended to readers who enjoyed other books about Little Bear and his family, as well as to those looking for engaging seek-and-find stories.

Picking up just where the previous title, The Bear's Song, left off, as Papa Bear and Little Bear attempt to snooze on the roof of the city opera house, this entertaining tale follows the ursine duo on a madcap adventure to a tropical island. After Little Bear is mistaken for a stuffed animal, and taken by a young human boy, Papa Bear must once again search for his wayward son, traversing urban environments, cruise ships, and underwater ecosystems in his quest. Eventually the two are show more reunited, deciding to spend their winter on the beach...

Originally published in France as Coquillages et petit ours, this over-sized picture-book boasts the same combination of entertaining story and intensely detailed and beautiful illustrations as its predecessor. Young children will enjoy following along as Papa Bear attempts (once again!) to track down his son, and will have fun searching each two-page spread for Little Bear, just as his father does. I have seen these Papa/Little Bear books compared to both Richard Scarry, as it concerns the detailed artwork, and the "Where's Waldo?" titles, with their search-and-find format, and I think the comparison is apt. Recommended to anyone who enjoyed the first book about Papa Bear and Little Bear, and to anyone who likes hunt-and-find stories.
