About the Author

(Helen) Beatrix Potter, 1866 - 1943 (Helen) Beatrix Potter was born in 1866 in London where she was privately educated. During most of her adult life, she lived in a farm cottage in Sawrey, Westmoreland County. She was unsuccessful in trying to publish her serious botanical work, watercolor studies show more of fungi, but she wrote and privately published "The Tale of Peter Rabbit" for an invalid child in 1900. This story became a children's classic throughout the world. Other animal characters created by her include, Benjamin Bunny, Jemima Puddle-Duck, and Mrs. Tiggy-Winkle. Her tales are illustrated by her own hand in delicate and detailed watercolor pictures depicting her characters. Potter's other works include "The Tailor of Gloucester" published in 1902 and "The Tale of Tom Kitten" published in 1907. At her death in 1943, she bequeathed her property in Sawrey to the National Trust, which also maintains her home as a museum. (Bowker Author Biography) show less

Short biography
Beatrix Potter was born in south Kensington, London, to a wealthy family. She was educated by a governess and had a sheltered childhood with her younger brother Bertram. They kept an assortment of pets, including rabbits, mice, frogs, lizards, snakes, snails, and bats.
She began to draw and paint at an early age, and her parents encouraged her interest in art, providing her with special tutors and taking her to exhibitions at galleries.
The family spent summers in Scotland and later in the English Lake District, which provided much inspiration for her later work. She made her debut as a writer with a small animal book called A Happy Pair (1890), published under the pseudonym H.B.P. Her most famous work, The Tale of Peter Rabbit, was privately printed in 1901 in an edition of 250 copies, and then published by Frederick Warne & Co. Her wildly popular series of children's books, with their charming watercolor illustrations, also launched entire industries of pottery, tea-towels, plush toys, and animated films. With her royalties, she bought Hill Top, a 17th-century farm at Sawrey, Lancashire, in the Lake District, which became the setting for several of her books. At age 47, she married William Heelis, a solicitor, and gradually stopped writing. She bought a sheep farm and spent her last 30 years raising Herdwick sheep.

I'm sure I'm not the only person who has been inspired to revisit Beatrix Potter's books through the recent film made about her life, Miss Potter. I grew up with various copies of her books, small and distinctive in their white binding, and cropping up everywhere in the house. Though I, with a child's clearsighted practicality, preferred fatter books with more words because they kept me occupied longer, every now and then I would gather as many Potter books as I could find and read them. I show more savored the books' small size, thick glossy pages, and expressive illustrations.

One of the reasons these books have aged so well is their sly humor. So much is implied: Peter not enjoying himself in Mr. McGregor's garden the second time around; Jemima Puddle-duck marveling at the number of feathers in the fox's shed; Mrs Tabitha Twitchit refusing to give credit at her store. In some ways the spare, flexible narrative style educates young readers to read between the lines and understand what isn't explicit. Just as in Austen, it's just as much about what isn't said as what is. The animal characters interact with one another quite like people do, with little social hypocrisies (that we can see and giggle at), children disobeying their mothers, neighbors being jealous of one another — scolding, singing, teasing, chasing, joking, playing, eating, living.

And the watercolors! They are at once very prim and proper in the style of Victorian manners, and yet so suggestive of action, excitement, mischief, and fun. Potter's stories may be very short, but half the tale is told by the pictures.

One thing that surprised me as I reread the stories as an adult is how honest they are about the possibility of death (by being eaten, mostly!). In The Tale of Mr Tod, baby bunnies are stolen and are only rescued from the fox's clutches at the last minute. In The Tale of Tom Kitten, the two rats roll up Tom into a doughy ball preparatory to devouring him. Jemima is rescued from the fox by the dog Kep, but the puppies rush in and gobble the eggs she was sitting on. Potter's little animal world may be quaint and charming, but it isn't sentimental.

The rhymes and poems remind me of J. R. R. Tolkien at his most childlike; I think of Tom Bombadil always breaking into nonsensical rhymes, always in a good humor. It must be a British thing in children's books to have characters who communicate in poetry and riddles.

Beatrix Potter's books, with their disarming simplicity and beautiful illustrations, are simply a treasure and I look forward to sharing them with my own children someday. Highly recommended!

I must admit to being quite fascinated both by Beatrix Potter's consummate skill as a watercolour artist and her skill at story telling. Here, the Tale of Peter Rabbit is printed as a large format (A4) version....not the little book format that she insisted on for her young readers. And, it must be admitted, was such a success. I don't know if the original illustrations were done this size..... Hmm, did a bit of research and found one held in the British Museum and from the size of the hands show more holding the picture I estimate that the original illustrations were either drawn at actual size for printing in the small format books or were about 30% larger and were reduced for publication (which would improve the apparent detail). It's significant that when she was approached by Walt Disney in 1930 for the rights to an animated version, she refused on the grounds that her pictures would have to be enlarged for the animation and this would emphasise all their flaws. And certainly, the original tale that she drew of Peter Rabbit, in a letter to Noel Moore. had very small drawings . I've also seen a preliminary drawing of Mr McGregor that was on paper 16.5 x 11.2 cm ...which leads me to think that the original drawings were the actual size that they were printed. Why does all this matter? Well the book under review here has large illustrations. This is great if one is studying her technique, colouration etc. but it does enhance any flaws. Frankly, I don't think it matters because the drawings still look lovely. And the story of Peter Rabbit is virtually poetry. I love the cadence when it's read aloud. And the hint of menace in most of her stories makes them all the more fascinating and slightly terrifying. ..."Your father had an accident there......pause........He was put in a pie by Mrs McGregor."
This book was published as a special edition to commemorate 100 years since the initial publication by Warnes. Maybe it underwrote their business for the 100 years because it's still being published in multiple languages...and is enormously popular in Japan, for example. (Though Warne's didn't copyright in the USA and lost all rights and royalties there....bad oversight. But interesting that the USA is now complaining about the same thing being done to them by China with intellectual property).
I'm a fan and this is a lovely book. As Warne's point out, with modern publishing technology, they were actually able to clean up the original drawings, maybe improve the colour slightly ...and it's a very worthwhile publication to have.....(even if it is not as Beatrix herself wanted it: as a tiny book for tiny hands). Actually I find the tiny books a pain to shelve....they are just a non-standard size.
Anyway, five stars from me. A lovely publication and a stunningly successful illustrated story.

When the nursery is empty and the dolls have gone on an outing, Tom Thumb and Hunca Munca, the two bad mice, enter the doll's house. They are delighted to find some food, but when they realize that it is not real, they run rampage.

The story is full of twists, and I must say that I totally rooted for the mice. My favourite picture is the one where Tom Thumb explains the dangers of the mouse trap to his family. I like that the pictures add details and content to the story. In any case, I love show more Beatrix Potter's pictures and especially these ones because the mice are so pretty and cute. I know that some people find them too saccharine, but I just love them. I never read these books as a child, but I totally enjoy the world Beatrix Potter creates. show less

Note: This review is for The Original Peter Rabbit Miniature Collection 5 - the ISBN on the bottom of the box links to this book page, however this page seems to be linked to multiple different novelty Beatrix Potter books. Also the ISBNs on the individual books also linked to different pages on Goodreads.

The novel part of this collection of four of Beatrix Potter's tales is that they are in miniature. Unfortunately, this doesn't do much for them since it is harder to see her beautiful show more drawings. The books included are The Story Of A Fierce Bad Rabbit, which is very short and not very good, The Tale Of Pigling Bland, which is longer than the standard Potter tale and has several intriguing but deliberately coy ideas in it, The Tale Of Mr. Tod, another surprisingly long tale and a full-on thriller, and Appley Dapply's Nursery Rhymes, which are some tiny little poems. This is a really odd collection to put together. Bad Rabbit and Apply Dapply are very short and clearly aimed at a young audience, whereas Pigling Bland and Mr. Tod are much longer and aimed at an older audience, so why sandwich them together? Unless it was to have something there for siblings of different ages.

The Tale Of Mr. Tod is not a very nice story - Potter claims that she usually writes about nice characters, which isn't true at all, but I guess what she means is she doesn't normally write about characters who would actually kill the characters from her other books. It is a shame though to paint foxes and badgers as completely horrible creatures. She really seems to have a grudge against badgers in particular. I guess one dug up her garden before she wrote this. It is an exciting story though, with both a baby rabbit abduction/rescue plot and a long-winded prank/murder plot to fill the length.

The Tale Of Pigling Bland is a little bit weirder, because it is one of those ones with humans in it, and it is never entirely clear what place pigs hold in the Potter-verse. Clearly some people turn them into bacon, but I think this is a sort of evil-murderer-down-a-dark-alley type thing rather than accepted by society, since pigs like all animals here talk and wear clothes and walk on their hind legs like people. It feels a little odd that everything in the story is so cagey, it is never entirely clear if Pigling knows what is happening and the happy ending is very rushed and vague, but the important part is that two piglets escape being murdered.

All in all, I wouldn't recommend this miniature collection and I think it would make more sense to just buy the normal books, which are pocket-sized anyway. And I wouldn't bother with the two shorter stories which really weren't interesting. But the two longer ones are entertaining.
