I had done a much more in depth review, which was deleted. I will say I was confused during much of the book, wondering if Soledad was mentally ill, or magic. But the book was so likeable that by the end I was rooting for magic to be real. I didn't think much of the book at first, but it is the type that your mind returns to over time, picking at small remembered details. I would like a chance to read another book by this author, with a better translation, because I think I would enjoy it.

I have to agree with many of the reviews that have already been posted. The translation of this book made it very difficult to read. I had to read it in shifts of only a few pages every few days. The sentence structure disrupted what I assumed were rich details of the story. I could only catch onto segmented concepts of the story, characters and descriptions.
Because it took me so long to read the novel I don’t feel comfortable giving a favorable review. Much of what I read was forgotten in the days it took for me to face reading more. I did gather and collect thematic and major story information but it wasn’t enough for me to feel attracted to the book.
The mystery and magical surrealism of the novel did remind me of other books I have read, which inspired me to finish the book.
It is my suspicion that the novel would have impressed me greatly if I were able to read it in its original language.

It's a testament to Ana Clavel's skill and talent that I rated this book so well. The translator and the copy editor/s did her such a disservice.

An intriguing tale of desire and liberation that is ultimately marred by a bad translation. It took me almost a month to get through this work. Maybe it was all the studying I was doing. Maybe the cold I had. All in all, the book was just not captivating. It is an interesting premise, but the dissatisfying translation and the many typographical errors destroy the enchantment.
