2022 movie #80. 1993. Archer (Day-Lewis), from a rich NYC family in the 1870s is engaged to May (Ryder) also from a rich family. Then May's cousin, Ellen (Pfeiffer) arrives and changes Archer's life. Great story and good characters. Didn't turn out as I expected.

The story of two Christian missionaries (Andrew Garfield and Adam Driver), who face the ultimate test of faith when they travel to Japan in search of their missing mentor (Liam Neeson)--at a time when Christianity was outlawed and their presence forbidden.

"Silence" is a soul-searching tribute to those who suffer persecution and the pains of martyrdom for Christ. Though the violence and torture in the film is difficult to watch, the overall experience one gains by watching the film is well worth the discomfort and horror. The film drives the viewer to question the meaning of faith, of martyrdom, of betrayal, apostasy, and repentance. One of the best movies a serious Christian can watch and ponder.

Substance: Slow-moving train-wreck for fickle fiancé.
Style: Lush and lovely to look at, but slow (probably stays too close to the novel, which I have not read).
