Barney Cohen

This great little monster story has stayed with me for years since published in 1977. A city worker is pulled from a wastewater holding tank, chewed up and dead. What's in the sewers system. As sewer workers search the tunnels, scientists puzzle out the evidence. The result will be a bloody confrontation. Great story. Highly recommended, well-designed pulp chiller.

A flimsy attempt to do a Chandler/Noir detective story in a Science Fiction setting.

Unfortunately it feels a bit muddled and not really snappy enough.

Which is a shame because I really wanted to like it.

There is a sequel, without Jim Baen as a co-writer...I won't be picking it up.
