Young man (born 1905) runs away to sea and sails as an apprentice on a full-rigged ship - joins colonial civil service in 1930s, in Malaya, India etc, has hair raising experiences escaping from then as a prisoner of the Japanese in World War !!, surviving against all odds, before returning to administrative duties in the post-war period.
