A well researched and written account of the home built in St Louis, Michigan by Colonel John Elwell completed in the year 1884. The details of the project are included, such as the timeline of construction, the period technology and household conveniences incorporated into the home, types wood used in the decorative woodwork, imported stained glass windows, and much more.

We learn a bit of personal history about Colonel Elwell and his family both before the house was built and after the family took up residence in the home. We also learn about the subsequent owners,up to the present day residents of the house.

The restoration efforts of the Church family are chronicled. The Churches bought the house in the 1950's and began the extensive work required to keep this magnificent structure standing whole and proud.

The photographs are an excellent feature. We see the house when it was newly built, and the progression of photos through the years shows how the house has changed with the times and the owner. Interior photos are included so that the details of the woodwork, glass and architectural details can be fully appreciated. The restoration work has also been chronicled, with before, during and after photos.

This book would be of interest to anyone who wants to learn more about Victorian homes, as well as those with an interest in the history of St Louis and Gratiot County, Michigan.
